Newsletter from March 28th Meeting

Posted by Virginia Ewing on Mar 30, 2014

We had no visiting Rotarians and had three guests.

REMINDER: We are packing food boxes at NW Harvest for the students.  Be there at 6pm.

NEW MEMBER: We ushered in a new/returning member, Steve Brashears. He shared with us his experience as a mentor when he was previously with our club. He originally would meet with the young man on Mondays and found him lethargic and almost depressed. They switched their time to Wednesday and there was a massive change in his behavior. He realized that it was because he was not eating on weekends and once he was in school for a few days and was having meals, he was a different kid. We look forward to having Steve back in the club.

Image

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE:  The Spokane Valley Club wants to join in our competition with Club 21 in recruiting new members. Remember that we need to start inviting friends and colleagues to come to meetings and see what being a Rotarian is all about. Club 21 has gone all in and is extremely serious about this completion.

Image

5 MINUTE BIOGRAPHY SPEECH: Bill Randal, originally from the San Francisco area, shared with us that he just celebrated his 60th birthday. He was in the Air Force for six years, serving as a boom operator on the KC135 refueling mid-air. He married at 19 and had two girls. He has three grandsons in Philadelphia and a granddaughter who lives in Moscow, ID.  He started into sales and in 1994, joined a mortgage company and then went to the banking industry. He currently handles mortgage loans for Global Federal Credit Union, doing re-finances and first time home buyers. For exercise, he has always played tennis and is now enjoying dancing, doing ballroom, swing and the popular Tango. He has been with our Rotary Club for 2 ½ years.

There was still no raffle winner and the pot is now just over $400

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Patricia Robinson notified us of the first annual KHQ/WorkSource Job Fair being held Aug 9th from 9-2 at the Convention Center. There is still free booth space available for companies having two or more job openings. The deadline for employers to respond is April 2nd. There will be free food and drinks. It’s a great opportunity for all of our small business owners and for job seekers alike.

Tony Baird announced that he has resigned from his position at KHQ and his new position is in sales and marketing for Zerorez Spokane. We wish him all the luck in his new endeavor.

There were no visiting Rotarians and no guest at this week’s meeting.

We are not having a meeting on Friday, Dec. 20th, as we are having a Christmas Party on Thursday, Dec. 19th. It is being held at the Coldwell Banker/Tomlinson (or Group Health South for those wish) Building at 4102 S. Regal St. on the top floor. Enter the Lobby and up the stairs. The Happy Hour is from 6-7pm, and the whole event runs from 6-9:30pm. It will be a fun event and we hope to see you all there to celebrate together. Remember to bring your new sock/underwear donation for Teen Closet!

Doug Juliano made an announcement that the Club is providing $100 gift cards to needy families at Roosevelt, Franklin, Lincoln Heights, Adams and an elementary school in Spangle. There will be three cards given to each school to help make the holidays brighter.

Our guest speaker was Tom Townsend, the Board President of Teen Closet. The organization was founded in 2008 by Robyn Nance (of KXLY) and Linda Rogers (Foster Parent Assn. President), from the inspiration from a similar organization in Florida called Taylor’s Closet. Their motto is “At Teen Closet, it’s their clothes, their style, their life, their choice.”

Notes from 15 Nov Meeting

Posted by Virginia Ewing on Nov 19, 2013

We made a net of 25-26K on the auction

We need to determine who won the BARROW OF BEER from the Auction

Our Christmas party will be on December 19th and is scheduled to be held at Tyler Cummins’s office, Coldwell Banker Tomlinson South, 4102 S Regal in an upstairs banquet room. It will be a potluck and we will be passing out sign-up sheets shortly, so start to think what you would like to bring to the festivities.

The homemade Almond Roca that was bought at the Auction was not picked up and although we knew who won it, Bill Randal bought it for a $1 raise on the winning $60 bid. Congrats!

Image

We have several members who have earned their Paul Harris Fellow pins. They will be awarded soon.

There are many members that either need to update their personal photos on our Photo Directory or are missing. We ask that they be passport-type photos with no political or business affiliations included. They should not include spouses, children, pets or sporting activities. If you need one taken, Gigi Ewing can take one of you after the meetings.

History of District 5080

Posted by Terri Creeley on Oct 23, 2013

We all know that Rotary began when Paul Harris formed the first club in Chicago in 1905. It wasn't until 1908 that the second Rotary Club was started in San Francisco. The West Coast proved to be fertile ground for the growth of the fledgling organization. 1909 saw clubs organized in Oakland (#3), Seattle (#4), and Los Angeles (#5). In the next year, Tacoma became the 8th club in Rotary. In 1911, Spokane became the 21st Rotary Club in a rapidly growing organization. Soon thereafter, Rotary became International with admission of the 35th club, Winnipeg.

In 1912, for administrative purposes, Rotary was divided into territories known as "Divisions". In 1914, the clubs in the Division, which included all of the Pacific Northwest, decided to hold their own conference. Held in Tacoma, this was the first of what we know today as "District Conferences".

In 1921 "Divisions" were changed to "Districts". We were in District #1. When Rotary expanded into Alaska in 1925, District #1 included Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

Rotary continued to expand and Districts were divided and re-numbered. In 1936 we became part of District #102. The following year this was split and we were in #101. In 1945 we were split into District #103 which is the area comprising our current District and our neighboring District to the West, District 5060. In 1949 we were renamed as District 153 and in 1956, we were split into our present territory and designated as District #156.

At that time, with our current territory, we had 24 clubs and 1,459 members. The following year we were renamed as District 508 and, when Rotary went with four digit District numbers, a '0' was added and we achieved our current designation - District 5080.

In our history as a district, from #1 in 1921 and through all our territorial divisions, we have always been international. Our clubs lobbied long and hard to maintain that international status at every proposed territory split. District 5080 proudly proclaims the true spirit of Rotary: "There are no Borders".

District Govenor Bob Carroll visits Spokane South Rotary

Posted by Virginia Ewing on Oct 08, 2013

Image Our guest this week was District Governor Bob Carroll, of the Deer Park Rotary Club. In his introduction, AG Jim Schindler listed many of Bob’s roles in Rotary. What was astounding was that he has only been a Rotarian for 92 months! Talk about “hitting the ground running!” He has been the president of his club after only 18 months, an Assistant Governor, an instructor at PETS, attended the Rotary Leadership Conference, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He leads by example and is a wonderful communicator.

Club Meeting - 9 Aug 2013

Posted by Terri Creeley on Aug 08, 2013

Great attendance today, it was great to see everyone!

Tony gave an update on the golf tournament – we made a net profit of a bit more than $6,000 and 84 players participated despite the rain. This is as much as we made last year, despite the fact that we had 50 fewer players this year. Thanks again to everyone who played, sponsored and volunteered for this great event!

We inducted two new club members today, GiGi Ewing who transferred to us from her previous club in New Zealand, and Patricia Robinson who is joining Rotary for the first time.

Karol reminded everyone that our goal is perfect attendance this year. Committee meetings, district events and service projects count as make-up activities, as do visits to other Rotary clubs. The make-up must occur within 14 days of the absence (before or after).

Does anyone want to travel to West Africa in October for PolioPlus? See Karol for details.

Jim Wolf gave a presentation on Military Awards. Contact Jim for a copy of the presentation, as it's too large to post to ClubRunner.

Karol would like a couple more of our kids to volunteer to discuss their Service Projects during next week’s meeting. Let her know if you children would like to participate.
